Panattoni Construction Inc. Wins American Concrete Institute (ACI)-GA Chapter First Place Award
Panattoni Construction Inc. won the Dan R. Brown Georgia Chapter ACI first place award for its Whirlpool Distribution Center job in Henry County, GA. The Whirlpool Distribution Center is an 82-acre facility built almost entirely of concrete, with the envelope of the building being site-poured tilt-up panels. In total, 83,300 cubic yards or 168,800 tons of concrete were manufactured on-site and poured to create foundations, floors, walls and pavement. The Whirlpool project is registered for LEED Certification and concrete played a large part in creating a sustainable building. “A component of this project’s LEED rating is the large amount of concrete paving used on the Whirlpool project,” said Brian Straley, VP/General Manager Panattoni Construction. “We paved 66-acres of the site and instead of using asphalt, concrete was used. Not only does the use of concrete help with lower maintenance costs, but it reduces the heat island effect on the microclimate of the site. Which when your project is the size of 28 football fields the right surface material can have a dramatic effect on heating and cooling costs.” The 18-month project was completed on May 1, 2009. More than 200,000 man-hours went into delivering this high-quality, energy efficient building for Whirlpool. Lafarge North America provided the concrete on-site through a portable plant and it was poured by Martin Concrete.
